Solving Runoff Problems

Importance of Watershed

A watershed is a land area that drains rain and other water into a creek, river, lake, wetland, or groundwater aquifer. Water from your neighborhood also enters the watershed through the storm drain system and flows directly to local creeks without any treatment. It often is contaminated by pollutants that can be toxic to fish, wildlife, and people.

Daisy, Shasta

Common name:Daisy, Shasta
Botanical name:Chrysanthemum maximum

The Shasta Daisy is a favorite for beds or cut flowers with its white flowers that are 4" across with yellow centers. These flowers bloom during the spring, summer and fall months. Plant in full sun or protect from afternoon sun in desert areas. It needs well draining soil and regular watering. Deadhead to promote more blooming. It reaches about 3' tall and wide.

Artemisia, Powis Castle

Common name:Artemisia, Powis Castle
Botanical name:Artemisia 'Powis Castle'

This mounding shrub reaches 3 ft. high and up to 5ft. wide with fine silver foliage. It does well in coastal areas as well as inland warm areas. It rarely blooms but is used for its beautiful foliage. It is striking next to perennials with bright colors. This shrub prefers full sun and well draining soil. It is drought tolerant once it's established.

Purple Coneflower / Echinacea

Common name:Purple Coneflower / Echinacea
Botanical name:Echinacea purpurea

The Purple Coneflower is a long-lived, reliable standby for the perennial garden. Rosy purple petals fall below the prominent orange-tinged cone and blooms in late June to September. It should be placed toward the front or middle of the border, or interplanted with Ox-Eye Daisy in the cut flower garden. It should be grown in fertile, well-drained soil. The plant blooms well in shade, but does even better in sun. -Holland WIldflower Farm

Soils and Compost:

Physical weed control, including mulching, or hand removal protects the watershed from harmful chemicals.

Integrated Pest Management:

Remove irrigation water and fertilizer from areas where you don't want weeds to grow.
