Dealing With Drought

More than half of the water used at your home is for outside purposes. Studies show that on average, half of the water used outdoors is wasted. The leading cause of waste is incorrectly set and poorly managed irrigation controllers. The second biggest cause of wastage is broken irrigation equipment that goes undetected. There are a few basic things you can do to make a big difference in your water use.

Gaura, Pink

Botanical name:Gaura lindheimeri 'Siskiyou Pink'

Pink Gaura is a profusely flowering perenial for all zones that grows 2-4ft. high. It has pink buds that open to showy pink and white flowers in spring and summer. It needs full sun and is drought tolerant. -Cornflower Farms

Artichoke

Common name:Artichoke
Botanical name:Cynara scolymus

This perennial will grow 4' tall and 6'-8' wide. It has silvery green leaves with bluish purple flowers that bloom in spring. Artichoke heart is a favorite vegetable of California kitchens but it is a great ornamental plant often overlooked for color contrast. Provide full sun, well draining soil and medium amount of watering for best harvest of the hearts.

Coreopsis, Double Sunburst

Common name:Coreopsis, Double Sunburst
Botanical name:Coreopsis grandiflora 'Double Sunburst'

The 'Double Sunburst' is a wonderful cultivar and a showy, Southern U.S. native. Golden yellow, double flowers on 2' bushy plants bloom from June to September in full sun and average to dry soils. It makes for good cut flowers, and pruning keeps the plants abundant with blooms. -Holland WIldflower Farm
